Olivia Hussey Eisley, the iconic actress best known for her portrayal of Juliet in Franco Zeffirelli’s 1968 adaptation of “Romeo and Juliet,” passed away peacefully at her home on December 27, 2024, surrounded by her loved ones. She was 73 years old.  

Early Life and Career

Born on April 17, 1951, in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Hussey Eisley embarked on a remarkable acting career that spanned several decades. Her breakthrough role came at the tender age of 15 when she was cast as Juliet opposite Leonard Whiting in Zeffirelli’s acclaimed adaptation of Shakespeare’s timeless tragedy. The film garnered critical acclaim and catapulted Hussey Eisley to international stardom, earning her a Golden Globe Award for her captivating performance.  

“Romeo and Juliet” and Controversy

While the film brought her immense fame, it also became embroiled in controversy. In late 2022, Hussey Eisley and Whiting filed a lawsuit against Paramount Pictures, alleging that they were filmed nude without their knowledge or consent during the production. The lawsuit, which was ultimately dismissed, highlighted the exploitation of child actors in the film industry.  

A Diverse Career

Following the success of “Romeo and Juliet,” Hussey Eisley continued to grace the silver screen with her talent. She starred in a variety of genres, including horror, with notable roles in films like “Black Christmas” (1974) and “Psycho IV: The Beginning” (1990). She also appeared in the acclaimed Agatha Christie adaptation “Death on the Nile” (1978) and the miniseries adaptation of Stephen King’s “It” (1990).  

Later in her career, Hussey Eisley explored diverse roles, appearing in the biographical film “Mother Teresa” (2003), the thriller “El Grito” (2003), and the comedy “Tortilla Heaven” (2001).  

A Life Beyond the Screen

Beyond her acting career, Hussey Eisley lived a life filled with passion and love. She was married to musician David Glen Eisley for 35 years, and together they raised their children, Alex, Max, and India. She was also a devoted grandmother to her grandson, Greyson.
